Ex-Woolworths Staff “quids in” with Poundland

After two and a half years at Woolworths in Four Oaks, Susan Harwood, was one of the thousands of employees who lost their job when the company went into administration. Wisely, she contacted her local branch of Remploy straight away.

Susan, 40, already had the right skills to get back into work, with qualifications in administration and her wealth of retail experience. So when she began attending key skills sessions, the focus was on building up her confidence and perfecting her application techniques.

In a matter of weeks, Susan was successful in obtaining a customer service role at Poundland’s brand new store on Martineau Way in Birmingham city centre. The store stocks 2,300 different lines and welcomes 17,000 customers a week through its doors, but Susan is relishing the challenge of working in such a fast paced and exciting environment.

“We have eight tills and they are busy all day long,” she said. “Lunchtimes are exceptionally busy but even when we open our doors at 8 a.m. people are already popping in on their way to work. Shoppers often comment on how big and bright the store is and our range of stock.”
