I joined the business believing I had more knowledge and ability than I would need for what I thought was “simply a Pound Shop”. But even with a strong background in fast paced retail, nothing prepared me for what lay ahead.

I was astounded at the volumes of customers visiting our stores – and the volume and pace of the product churn. Although the business was still establishing itself on the high street, I quickly identified that the Poundland offer was unique.

Most retailers have the benefit of being able to inflate and deflate prices to attract footfall. Poundland relies purely on fantastic products at exceptional value for money, creating amazing value every day. In the face of tough trading conditions, we’re still expanding – one of the only retailers opening new stores on the high street today.

As a Business Manager, a big part of my challenge is to ensure we grow our people as we grow the business. Over the past few years we have developed an excellently structured working environment, clear direction and great communication on how our business is progressing. And now, our dedicated training department tailors the correct training package to suit every colleague at every level.
