I actually came out of retirement to join Poundland. I’d heard a colleague from my previous role was working here and looking for someone to take on a Project Management role. It sounded intriguing. This was my opportunity to use my skills and knowledge of shop design, building and maintenance in a new environment.

Things were even better than I expected. Any preconceptions of a “cheap” company were quickly erased. Poundland is totally professional, thorough and effective. There’s a very high level of satisfaction among its customers and its colleagues.

Of course, it’s demanding. My work is about providing immediate and continuous response and high performance. I travel across the UK. Dates and deadlines can be tight, and budgets need to be met. But it’s also exciting and pleasing that we’re growing and moving forward. We’re achieving our goals, and the hard work is paying dividends.

My advice to a new joiner? Don’t forget to make the most of the development opportunities open to you. You’ll find this is a thrilling place to be busy.
